Clouds are attempting to empty themselves on us again, but they are not very successful just yet. The yard smells so good. The privet has just about finished blooming, but there is honeysuckle to take its place. Mmmmmm! And the catalpa is blooming. The yard is alive and well. :D

The stupid industrious squirrel broke one of the bird feeders. Dang it! It may be fixable, but it's difficult to tell until Jeff looks at it. Maybe he can.

A bee enjoyed the bird bath, though. He even sat still long enough for me to snap a pic. :D

Something took a bite out of two tomato leaves...

Maybe this little critter? I named him Rhett...he's quite charming and a total scamp! ;)

Bokeh is going crazy...there's a squirrel on the roof, a blue jay in a tree and a rabbit on the ground. The poor dog doesn't know where to turn to bark. LOL!

To all the moms and grandmoms on my LJ flist...I hope your day is sweet!

deltamiss: (Gardening Miss)
The Sunday morning walk around the yard didn't yield much today.

Mabry and I planted a couple of new tomatoes, a basil and a parsley yesterday. Somehow I managed to pick up two plants I really didn't want - curly parsley and a hybrid tomato - but, oh, well. Everything seems to be doing fine except some impatiens. They don't seem to be settling in as well as usual.

The focus of today's photographs is weeds. Yes, weeds. I have this thing about nature's beauty whether the common or the spectacular. Um...I don't really have any spectacular weeds in my yard, but what is out there is pretty beautiful in its own right.

I know next to nothing about roses, but there is a small bush in Melanie's front yard that I practically hacked pruned to death back in March.

It is loaded with tiny buds now. The color is odd...red with a bluish cast. Or maybe closer to burgundy. Anyway, it's blooming well for the first time since we moved here five years ago.

It may be a climber. Or maybe not. Heck, it may not even be a rose! The only rose I've ever planted and grown was an old fashioned pink runner that Daddy rescued from his mother's place in 1997. It practically took over the fence in two years!

Note: noon is definitely NOT the best time to take pictures.

deltamiss: (Rainy Day)
We have missed the worst of the weather I think. There was a 70% chance of rain last night, a 70% today and tonight, but the sun is shining and has been off and on all day. We could use the rain, but I don't want the severe thunderstorms that produce hail. I just planted a garden, for goodness sakes! However, my joints are screaming. That usually means rain. :/

Today was actually a nice first day back after a long break. The kids were surprisingly good, but then I didn't give them much room to do anything but work. ;)

Not much doing in Down East North Carolina tonight so I'll leave you with some macros I took this evening. I'm sort of pleased with these.

Apparently, the Chime Tree has been attacked by some sort of burrowing beetle - maybe a bark beetle. Anyway, as we searched for a good limb on which to hang my newest chime, Melanie broke off a dead one. Look what was inside! ACK!

I've been watching the dogwood buds for a couple of weeks now. There is only one tree amongst the overgrown vegetation between us and the neighbors to the south, but it is loaded with buds. I anxiously await the full blooms.

Last week's photo...

Wonder what next week's will look like?

I usually walk around the yard on Sunday morning, but since it's supposed to rain today and tomorrow, I thought I'd get it in early. Besides, Bokeh was begging for food. ;)

One of the plants I like to use in container gardening is the ornamental sweet potato. Last year Peyton planted one, and I planted one.

This afternoon while Melanie and I were chatting in front of my apartment, I began to pull out some of the dead material from the pots. Look what I found...

Peyton's sweet potato vine produced a potato! I've never had this happen before, and mine didn't produce anything except roots. Peyton was so proud. If I'd known it was there last fall, I'd have pulled it up and cooked it for him. LOL!

It's a gorgeous day in Eastern North Carolina. When I took my usual Sunday morning stroll around the yard, evidence of spring was everywhere )
deltamiss: (Gardening Miss)
It's only 12:30, and we've already passed the predicted high of 69°! The sun is shining...a breeze is blowing...the air even smells different. Surely winter is almost over.

Look what I found this morning! Is a periwinkle a sure sign spring is coming?

deltamiss: (Gardening Miss)
Almost four years ago I planted four rosemary bushes in two HUGE clay pots. Today for the first time, there are blooms on one. Teeny-tiny blue blooms. So tiny I couldn't hold the camera still enough to get a good shot.

deltamiss: (Brrrr!)
The snow is melting quickly now, but that means the icicles are, too. YIKES! Three just missed me this morning!

The pansies have been pretty much covered since day before yesterday.

And we had a visitor this morning.

deltamiss: (Spinning Snowflake)
Um, okay. So I've only had this camera a month, but I SHOULD have noticed the settings for CLOUDS! DUH! I could have avoided all the 'blue' pictures yesterday. [livejournal.com profile] heartmart was kind enough to fiddle with some for me, but I've decided to leave the previous post as is as a reminder. 'Cause...you know...I'll forget. Thanks, Billie!!

Today the sun is out and the temperature is supposed to rise to a balmy 31°. I sort of dread the drive to work in the morning. Let's hope there is no black ice left on the road at 5:00 A.M. :/

Since I discovered the correct setting, I went out early to take some pictures and discovered I'm surrounded by...Sno-Cones and Popsicles )
